What happens when you come for counselling
We offer counselling and support in a safe and comfortable environment easily accessible for those living Hull and the East Riding and to ease the demand on our services in Hull we have also opened a small outreach service in Grimsby and hope to open another office in Scunthorpe area in the future.
If you live in the Grimsby area and wish to contact us to make an appointment please ring our central number on 01482 226677 if we are unable to take your call, please leave a message and we will get back to you.
When an appointment has been made for you, you will be given the address of where to come. Counselling sessions last for an hour and take place at the same time each week. You can decide whether you would like to see a male or female counsellor. The majority of our counsellors have a degree in counselling or are working towards achieving this qualification. All are registered with the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists. Our organisation is fully committed to improving the well-being of our clients by fully supporting our practitioners in their continuing professional development and ensuring they receive clinical supervision on a regular basis.
The counselling session
The counselling session offers you the opportunity to identify things that are troubling you. It is clearly and explicitly contracted and the boundaries of the relationship between you and your counsellor are clearly defined. Counselling or therapy as it is sometimes called is designed to help your self-exploration and understanding. The counselling process should help you to identify thoughts, emotions and behaviours that, once accessed, may offer you a greater sense of personal resources and self-determination to change as well as give you the opportunity to explore, discover and clarify ways of living more resourcefully and towards greater well-being. Because you may be the victim of rape, sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse or sexual exploitation you will need time to build up a trusting relationship with your therapist before exploring perhaps more painful memories. A trauma such as rape and or childhood sexual abuse can have short and long lasting effects and there is no set time when you should be ‘over it.’ We can help you understand how this experience has affected you and accessing therapy will enable you to cope with the changes and difficulties that can result from these experiences. Counselling cannot change what has happened to you but it can help you adapt to life afterwards. It is important that you remember that you are not to blame for what has happened to you. This was not your fault. Whoever did this to you, hold them wholly responsible for their actions. We will help and support you through your healing process for as long as it takes.
Counselling is being heard, cared for, not told what to do. The relationship between your counsellor and you must be honest, genuine, non-judgemental ad you should be able to talk about anything at all that you think is important.
